Developed in 1922 by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt, Regent is now the most widely planted red variety in Austrian vineyards and it grows very well in our Lake Erie vineyards. A cross between St. Laurent (similar to Pinot Noir) and Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt makes an easy drinking medium-light bodied red wine known for bright fruity flavors akin to Beaujolais or Zinfandel. Its taste profile and character includes bright acidity, cherry and raspberry fruit flavors, subtle earthiness, a hint of pepper, chocolate, and cinnamon and soft tannins. Zweigelt also has a lovely bright, iridescent ruby/purple color that shows beautifully in the glass.

Zweigelt’s higher than typical acidity makes it a great wine to pair with food, nicely slicing through fatty and rich flavors. Try it with sausages, duck, poultry or späetzle with cheese and caramelized onions or even jambalaya.
